We are a very busy privately owned , high quality reference lab located in sunny southern California in the Irvine Spectrum. This laboratory is CLIA and CDPH licensed providing TECH only histology services for clients nationwide.


Contra Costa County Health Services currently has a temporary, full-time opportunity for a Histotechnician. Under supervision, the successful candidate will prepare tissue specimens for examination; dehydrate, block, cut, stain and mount tissue specimens; and perform related work as required. Positions in this class are responsible for preparing tissue and cytology specimens for examination by a Pathologist or Cytotechnologist. These positions are distinguished from those in the class of Cytotechnologist in that only the preparation of tissues is required rather than the performance of cytological laboratory tests and analyses. Technical work direction is received from the pathologist and supervision is provided by the Laboratory Manager or Supervisor.


Education: Completion of an Associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution OR (A) completion of at least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that includes either (1) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR (2) 24 semester hours of science courses that include: six semester hours of chemistry; six semester hours of biology; and twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination; OR (B) laboratory training that includes either of the following: (1) Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES (Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools) the CAHEA (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs), or other organization approved by HHS (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services).

Experience: Six months of full-time, or its equivalent, experience in a histology laboratory preparing and mounting pathological tissue specimens.

Knowledge of:

  • The techniques, methods and procedures used in dehydrating, blocking, cutting, staining and mounting tissue specimens

  • Terms used in a pathological tissue laboratory

  • The danger of hazardous chemical reactions

  • The proper disposal of harmful and dangerous chemicals

Under general supervision of the Histology Associate Director, prepare microscopic tissue slides for research purposes. Histological procedures such as: tissue preparation, sectioning, histochemical standard and special staining, single/multiplex IHC and ISH staining. Antibody/ISH probe workups, digitalizing glass slides and Image Analysis. Quality control, trouble shooting, adding new ideas/technologies.   • Preparing microscopic slides on human/animal tissue for research/diagnostic purposes, including processing, embedding, microtomy, and mounting to include both paraffin processed tissue and frozen sectioning

  • Performing complex histochemical and immunohistochemical stains, data recording, and maintaining instruments

  • Quality control and quality assurance procedures, performing routine and special staining

  • Slide organization, preparing and maintaining all necessary reagents, including stains, alcohols, and paraffins according to proper specifications

  • Handling and disposing of hazardous materials

  • Processing specimen accessioning to include all manual and computerized data entry

  • 3-10 years of Histology laboratory experience

  • Proficient with tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, histochemical stains and automated IHC equipment

The Histotech is responsible for the daily handling of samples submitted for histology processing. This includes: tissue processing, embedding, cutting, and staining of H&E, special stain, IHC, CISH, or DIF stains. Responsible for reagent and tissue control block and slide inventory. Assists with other departmental duties as needed including training of new personnel. Serves as a liaison for the laboratory and interacts with physicians and customers to provide a positive outcome. Performs all job duties in a timely manner while ensuring performance and safety standards are met. Documents activities and results consistently, thoroughly, and legibly. We are hiring for full time positions, primarily on the night shift, with some openings on day shifts.

Requirements: - High school diploma or GED. - Experience working in a CAP accredited histology lab. - Skilled in use of histology equipment for tissue processing, embedding, cutting and staining of tissues for pathologic diagnosis.


The Lead Histotech is responsible troubleshooting and dictating workflow on their shift. The Lead is also responsible for the daily handling of samples submitted for H&E and special stains as well as area operations management. This includes: stain protocol optimization and validations, control tissue inventory and stain verification, and daily QA. Demonstrates proficiency with cutting paraffin blocks. Responsible for reagent and tissue control inventory. This includes researching and identification of key tissue components within surgical cases, embedding tissues, staining verification for intended use, and documentation for use as controls. Works closely with Pathologists on staining protocols and to ensure best practices in the Histology Laboratory. Assists with other departmental duties as needed including training of new personnel. Serves as a liaison for the laboratory and interacts with physicians and customers to provide a positive outcome. Performs all job duties in a timely manner while ensuring performance and safety standards are met. Documents activities and results consistently, thoroughly, and legibly. We have two full time lead positions - one on day shift and one on night shift.

Requirements: - Experience running and QCing H&E and special stain protocols. - Optimizing and validating histology stains according to professional standards. - Cutting FFPE blocks on a microtome. - Embedding tissues for formation of paraffin blocks. - HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP)


The Histology Supervisor will oversee production on the night shift with a team of 10-15 techs. The Supervisor is responsible for oversight of the activities and functions of the Histology department. Provides functional expertise to staff and leadership. Assists in the laboratory and provides troubleshooting assistance when needed. Ensures effective use of system resources. Participates in standards of practice and process improvement activities. Participates in hiring, oversees daily productivity, and creates staffing schedule. Ensures policy and procedures are followed by staff. May cover bench if needed.
